<p>This book is based on years of field-validated research and hands-on production Oracle systems analysis. While laptop tests are valuable, they lack the risk and suspense of working on real systems. Everything in this book has been tested to the best of my ability. Not only have I validated this book's contents, but the thousands of DBAs I have worked with have been using these methods (and some of the tools) for nearly 20 years now. I think that's proven enough.
</p><p>But keep in mind that I will use abstraction when details are not necessary. While useless details make great cocktail party conversation, they don't help much with production Oracle systems.
</p><p>This book is for you, not me. I did not write this book to impress myself. My ego is secure. I wrote this book to help me do what I love doing, and that's teaching. Honestly, there is a financial component involved, but ask any author, and he will tell you the payoff is not in the book royalties. I hope you quickly realize I am trying to teach (with some entertainment mixed in), not preach, and give you clear evidence of the usefulness of the methods and techniques I recommend.
